Maidana’s camp eyes Pacquiao after Mayweather, says not even witchcraft can save the Filipino boxer

Boxing living legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. divulged that one reason why he’s not too eager to fight eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao is the small prize that the Filipino carries.

Image

“He’s just a six-million (dollar) fighter,” he said of Pacquiao in the promotional video of his fight with Argentine Marcos Maidana on May 3, 2014 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

He also taunted Pacquiao for fighting like an amateur in the Filipino’s rematch with compatriot Timothy Bradley.

“Is it about the money? Absolutely! Is it about the fame? Absolutely! It’s everything wrapped in one. I wanna be the best, not just the best fighter, I wanna be the best athlete, period. When I leave, I wanna be known as TBE, and that’s The Best Ever,” the 45-win no-loss 26 KOs pound-for-pound king introduced himself in the Showtime Pay-Per-View primer.

The video shows Mayweather’s lifestyle—88 luxury cars, palatial home, $5 million worth of jewelry and watches, jet plane and all other things his one-million-dollar-a-month (average) earnings can buy.

On the other hand, Maidana lives in a more humble surrounding in Argentina. He is determined in this fight—if not to win then at least to hurt Mayweather.

The Argentine gave Adrien Broner his first loss in their fight last December 14 via a unanimous decision for the WBA welterweight crown and said that Broner is actually stronger than Mayweather, so he can hurt the flamboyant superstar.

His camp also said that they are eyeing Manny Pacquiao next.

“Not even witchcraft can save him,” they laughed.

In Manny’s fight versus Bradley last April 12 (April 13 in Manila), which the Filipino boxer won by unanimous decision, his mother became the toast of social media when she was seen doing some sort of hexing (which the international media thought it was) towards the end of the fight. Mommy Dionisia, however, explained that she was actually praying to the Sto. Nino (Child Jesus) and her gestures were just part of the prayers.

The Mayweather vs Maidana match is dubbed as The Moment, with Mayweather Promotions saying it’s arguably just as good as The One, the name of Mayweather’s fight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last September.

Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia said that he’s preparing his ward to throw 100 punches per round as Mayweather is very defensive and does not throw a lot of punches.

He added that winning is not easy, but nothing is impossible, noting that even the best fighters have lost—like Ray Leonard and Muhammad Ali.

Meanwhile, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum urged the public to boycott Mayweather’s fight on May 3 to force a Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown.

“The only people that can make Floyd Mayweather fight Manny is the public, if they boycott the nonsense on May 3. That’s what the public should do. (If the media doesn’t) want that fight, tell the public not to buy the Pay-Per-View and not to buy the tickets. There’s no other strategy,” Arum said during the post-fight press conference to answer in Manny’s behalf why until now the Filipino superstar is not fighting the American champ.

Pacquiao unanimous decision win a redemption from Bradley cheat victory two years ago

Not only was Manny Pacquiao hungry for the redemption from the cheat win of Timothy Bradley two years ago, but also the 90 million Filipinos at home and those scattered abroad, and many hundreds of millions of other people all over the world who swore that it was the boxing icon from Sarangani Province who clearly won in that fight.

Manny connects the punch to Bradley’s face

The first few rounds were tentative for both in the rematch held Saturday night (Sunday noon in Manila) in Las Vegas, with Bradley looking like he was the one getting the upper hand, until the seventh round when Manny staggered the American fighter.

Although no one got knocked down or knocked out, the points were clear that Manny won the fight—116-112, 116-112, 118-110.

Fighting for redemption was the name of the game for Manny

Bradley, who said in earlier reports that he wanted to commit suicide because he was booed wherever he went as people said he actually lost the fight to Pacquiao, should feel better now—not for thinking it’s an undeserved win for his opponent but his well-deserved loss to the 8-title boxing superstar.

Biggest winner is… Mommy D!

With the WBO welterweight belt back, Pacquiao’s current standing is 56-5-2, 38 knockouts. Bradley suffered his first loss, now with a record of 31-1-0, 12 KOs.

American Idol Season 11 runner-up Fil-Am Jessica Sanchez sang the Philippine National Anthem, Lupang Hinirang, while Ashanti sang The Star-Spangled Banner.

Meanwhile, Manny’s wife Jinkee, who’s scheduled to give birth to their fifth child anytime this month, tearfully said on TV that at 35, Manny has nothing to prove anymore and should retire now.

She asked her husband, “How much money do you want in this world when (that means) you’re away from your family?”

Right after the fight, though, Pacquiao said that his win over Bradley “proves that my boxing journey will continue.”

Manny hugs Tim after the fight

Coach Freddie Roach definitely want a rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez, who knocked out Manny asleep for a few minutes that made fans and supporters weep.

The Filipino pugilist started to regain lost glory when he won over Brandon Rios in Macau in November last year.

Lest we forget also the possibility of a mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
