MU 2014 Miss Jamaica brouhaha: Trump Universe not ready for short-haired queen, poor listening skills

Fans and self-proclaimed beauty pageant experts are still debating on social media that Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennell was robbed of the Miss Universe 2014 crown that went to Miss Colombia Paulina Vega.

“If she’s not Miss Universe she should be the 1st Runner-Up,” said one enthusiast.

“She’s the People’s Queen,” said another.

Some people who were at the venue – Florida International University in Doral, Florida, USA – on coronation night reported that there was a loud boo when Miss Jamaica was named 4th Runner-Up. She also reportedly made the thumbs down sign and candidates gathered around her, expressing disapproval of her placement in the finals.

Sifting through the predictions and forecasts, Miss Jamaica was in Top 5 by SOME but never was the top pick to win the crown.

Right after the preliminaries on January 22, many thought Miss Jamaica got a good chance to enter Top 5 but also cautioned that Miss Universe Organization or MUO (owned and ruled by Donald Trump) is not ready for a short-haired queen. Not only because of beauty product sponsors, particularly for hair grooming, but most notably long hair is a symbol of femininity which the Miss Universe is all about as against short hair as manly.

In the Q & A of the five finalists, Miss USA Nia Sanchez was not sure if she fully understood Manny Pacquiao’s question. Miss Netherlands asked Judge Giancarlo Stanton to repeat the question thru co-host Natalie Morales. Miss Ukraine was helped by an interpreter.

On Miss Jamaica’s turn, Judge Emilio Estefan gave his question. “One or three women will experience a violence in her lifetime. What can be done to get that number down?”

Miss Jamaica answered: “I, I’m sorry I did not understand.”

“Well, that happens a lot,” (then laughter).

Mr. Estefan repeated: “One or three women will experience a violence in her lifetime. What can be done to get that number down?”

She then answered with the live crowd erupting in applause and noise.

Rob Dyrdek’s question was interpreted for Miss Colombia. She answered in Spanish but the crowd obviously got delighted by her answer.

In simplest terms, both Miss Netherlands and Miss Jamaica have either poor understanding or not so excellent listening skills.

The Miss Universe Pageant is also a job application. Those shortlisted have all the chances in getting the job depending on the outcome of the interview. And asking an interviewer to repeat a question is a display of poor comprehension in a job application. The candidate is either not proactive or the mind is not totally engrossed to the process.

In the field of sales and customer service (particularly for phone voice accounts), asking the caller or customer to repeat a question would merit the lowest possible score in an evaluation.

For sure, it was tedious for the judges to repeat their prepared questions and the seemingly clueless candidate could not be ranked #1 by any of them. Sympathy of the other judges would go to their fellow judge who asked the question.

And that’s why Miss Jamaica was placed last.

End of story.
